Whether you love them or loathe them, bugs are all around us – in fact incredibly 96% of all known animals are bugs. Invertebrates (the more formal name for bugs) are amazing creatures, from the way they look to the critical role they fulfill in our ecosystems and we have got closer than ever to them by developing the new ‘Bugs Count’ app for the Natural History Museum.
The app supports the OPAL (Open Air Laboratories) ‘Bugs Count’ survey which was launched in June 2011. The app contains a guide to the common bugs you may find in your garden, a gallery of some of the great images from the Natural History Museum but most importantly it allows everyone to help the scientists at the museum. People can help find six particular species of interest around their area, take a photo within the app and it sends it directly to the OPAL scientists.
“The new app’s a fun way to discover British wildlife and take part in a nationwide scientific study at the same time. I hope everyone will download it and learn to love bugs as much as we do!”
Lucy Carter, OPAL Biodiversity Scientist.

We developed the ‘Bugs Count’ app with new HTML5 technology which allows the app to be used on both Apple iPhones and also Android based phones to ensure the widest audience possible for this great project. We worked closely with the Natural History Museum’s IT team to make sure the app automatically syncs the data with their main database to make sure every bug sighting gets to the scientists. You can download ‘Bugs Count’ at both the iTunes Store and the Android Marketplace.
