At the end of the 4th century AD, Venta Icenorum at Caistor was a bustling Roman settlement, complete with bathhouse, forum and amphitheatre. Today there's little visual evidence of the town left, meaning interpretation has to reveal its exciting story to visitors without using large installations or disturbing the site's valuable archaeology.
An immersive mobile phone audio tour using mobitour technology (www.mobitour.co.uk) was developed, encouraging visitors on a personal journey of imagination. Users can listen to different 'layers' of content, aimed at specific audiences, as they follow a route marked with discrete plaques, each with a map and reconstruction illustration of the site in its Roman heyday.

"This pioneering and exciting technology has enabled this isolated site to be brought to life, and for the ever increasing number of visitors to experience some of what Venta Icenorum may have been like in its heyday." Councillor Michael Windridge, South Norfolk Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Heritage, Enterprise and Culture.
