Wild about Wild Space

How do you engage communities with their local nature reserves?  In the case of the Wildspace Project in London’s east end, the answer (in part at least) is a new smartphone app. The Wildspace Project is part of the Thames Gateway Development  - a flagship project for the East London Green Grid – and involves the development of a 640 hectare (1,580 acre) conservation park intended for preserving wildlife and promoting leisure use. Working closely with a project team from the London Borough of Havering, the RSPB and Jacobs Engineering, we developed an...

A Big Book of Games

Do you remember the games you used to play as a child? What about the games your parents or grandparents used to play? Sadly, many childhood games have been usurped by Nintendo Wii, Facebook and Twitter. That’s why Norfolk Rural Communities Council (NRCC), in partnership South Norfolk District Council and with Big Lottery funding, invited us to help implement their vision for a series of larger-than-life play books situated in 10 community green spaces which illustrate traditional outdoor children’s games. Targeted at the 8 – 11 year age range, each Big...

Avalon and on and on…

The Avalon Marshes Landscape Partnership (AMLP) is hoping that there is a bright future for the Avalon Marshes. This iconic landscape, which lies at the heart of the Somerset Moors and Levels, conjures up images of Arthurian legends and magical scenes of swirling mists infused with the haunting calls of wildfowl. Loaded with archaeological, cultural and wildlife significance, it is also a landscape whose future is at stake, from factors as diverse as climate change, farming practices and peat extraction, and a landscape whose story needs to be more widely heard. That is...

Get On the Copper Trail

We’ve recently completed our part in a major tourism and regeneration initiative, championed by the Isle of Anglesey County Council’s Economic Development Unit. The project aims to get people out and about on their bikes and spending money in the north eastern quarter of Anglesey. Lon Gopr (The Copper Trail) is in fact part of the National Cycle Network and is one of a number of cycle routes on the island. Before I got to know Anglesey, I didn’t appreciate...

Parc Cwm Darran and Aberbargoed Grasslands

I’ve recently had the opportunity to visit two fantastic sites in Caerphilly – Parc Cwm Darran, and Aberbargoed Grasslands. Parc Cwm Darran is an inspiring example of how industrial sites can be reclaimed for nature and recreation. In the years since the coal mines were closed in 1975, the Darran Valley has been transformed. Millions of tonnes of coal waste have been reshaped into rolling green hillsides, thousands of trees have been planted, and two lakes have been created. Walking and cycling trails lead off into the hills and forests, groups of friends and families...
