According to world heritage organisation UNESCO: “Intangible culture is the counterpart of culture which is tangible or touchable, whereas intangible culture includes song, music, drama, skills, cuisine, annual festivals, crafts, and the other parts of culture that can be recorded but cannot be touched and interacted with”. Further, intangible culture is something that is passed from one generation to the next. We conceptualised an entire museum about the intangible culture of the ancient and culturally rich city of Suzhou. Examples of intangible culture included Kunqi Opera, K’o-ssu weaving, tea drying, lantern and fan-making and nut and jade carving. The design intent for this project was to minimise the use of conventional graphics and to carefully disguise and integrate technology to provide a multi-sensory, interactive learning experience.
