Sometimes we hit the wall.
Sometimes there seems no way out.
Sometimes we feel as though the demands placed on us seem too much to handle.
This is what author Seth Godin calls “The Dip”.
In my experience, and, counter intuitively, The Dip is the place where we learn most about ourselves, it is the crucible of character formation, it is a time in life that presents us with choices.
We all have choices, no matter what situation you find yourself in. There is a choice to run, hide, escape… a choice to blame others, find that scapegoat, become hard nosed and a bully. Whatever we choose and however we decide to deal with The Dip, that decision will determine the rest of your life until The Dip finds you again, and it will.
I don’t think The Dip is a place to fear though, it is an essential part of life. Learning is the human condition. We either learn to cheat or play fairly, to avoid or to confront, to duck the responsibility or put our hands up to the truth. It’s these times that we even learn our fundamental human condition, do we choose to hate or do we choose to love. If we choose to hate we can be sure The Dip will be back around all the sooner, but, choosing love means we go progressively longer without Dips.
I’m only just finding all this out. I’m learning to love, but I’m making a million mistakes along the way.
I have made a decision though….. have you?
